Psa 16:7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.
Pro 8:12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
Pro 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Pro 8:14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
Pro 8:15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
Pro 8:16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
Pro 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
Pro 8:18 Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
Pro 8:19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
Pro 19:21 There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
Pro 24:3 Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:
Pro 24:4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
Pro 24:5 A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
Pro 24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counselors there is safety.
In the day to day press there is always a multitude of counselors. Everyone to whom you talk has “advise” but if you listen to the advise of the counselors of the world you may find yourself in a horrific mess.
But there is a counsel whose advise is sound. It is so sound in fact that if you fail to listen and to take it heart and act upon it, you can find yourself in an absolutely horrific mess. That counsel comes in the Presence of the Lord. His Spirit is Wisdom personified. We know that Spirit is the Spirit of the Lord. So then….
Pro 2:6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Pro 2:7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
Jas 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
This is the counsel you need if you are to lead. When the people come in the day which this is written for, and they come with their fear and baggage and sickness and perhaps even madness or sorrows of soul. When the whole world seeks to destroy us as a people for the sake of the One we serve, and those who escape and run to us are in such a state, we need to have cool emotions soothing tones and a whole lot of answers and we cant wait around to long or lives could be lost. This is when He is who is Wisdom is most sought and most needed and yet a habit of going daily into His presence who IS WISDOM, will yield for us the ability to have a calm cool and collected estate and the answers people seek.
But we have to go humbly and be still before the Lord. Moreover wisdom I find doesn’t long giver herself to the those who are not discrete. Sometimes wisdom dictates to simply shut the mouth and keep your interior counsel close to the vest.
Not everyone needs to know.
Failure to go and to listen can lead to disaster because the Lord sees and knows more than we do. Consider this passage.
Jos 6:27 So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.
(Joshua had just spectacularly defeated the invincible Jericho.)
Jos 7:1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
Jos 7:2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
Jos 7:3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
Jos 7:4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
Jos 7:5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
Jos 7:6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
Jos 7:7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
Jos 7:8 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
Jos 7:9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
Oh the agony of this defeat and the fame of the great terror of Canaan evaporates in the wind.
Now had Joshua first sought the Lord he might have heard something like this…. DO not go up to Ai, you will be defeated… Instead Joshua just sends the troops and now in the face of this sound defeat he is laying in the dirt before God absolutely undone, and he hears this:
Jos 7:10 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
Jos 7:11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
Jos 7:12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
Well the rest is history, Joshua was given specific instruction as to what to do and how to go about finding the culprit in the midst of all these people. Once the offense was removed of course Ai … fell.
However here is another time that Joshua did not take counsel and went ahead and actually got royally fooled.
Jos 9:3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
Jos 9:4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
Jos 9:5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.
Jos 9:6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
Jos 9:7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
Jos 9:8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
Jos 9:9 And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
Jos 9:10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
Jos 9:11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
Jos 9:12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:
Jos 9:13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
Jos 9:14 And the men took of their victuals (food), and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
Jos 9:15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.
Jos 9:16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
That’s right they were neighbors. Problem is that God had told Joshua to make no league or compact or deal of any sort with his “neighbors” and having done so he was stuck with it and so was the nation. These Gibionites proved not to be the blessing one might have hoped for .
You see now the value of that Presence and of being in it daily at every turn and for every decision of life? He knows and sees much more that we do and wills to share what He knows.
Think about it.
